3D Printing in Paris

My third annual trip to Paris to produce a platform for creativity and education at Le Carrousel du Louvre went just as well as expected. Within the context of culture and heritage that is the museum itself, I was delighted to put together another five conference tracks over two days, which hosted presentations and panel discussions about 3D printing for numerous sectors.

My role at 3D Printshow requires me to produce sessions exploring topics like Industry and Healthcare - but for me, the opportunity to create a Design track was the highlight of my work. In order to focus on a France / European 3D printing community, I was thrilled to work once again with Arthur Mamou-Mani, fresh back from California on a school trip to Burning Man, along with the inspiring individual that is Patrick Baudisch from Germany's prestigious Hasso-Plattner Institute. Seperately, their investigations - both in a design and an academic sense - into 3D printing for modular and conceptual design are stunningly beuatiful, and I'm convinced that they are leading this area of innnovation towards some incredible results.

Creating platforms for discussion and knowledge sharing is a huge passion of mine, and at Paris this year, I certainly felt a few "wow" moments in which I knew I'd created an extremely special moment of conversation. I was especially proud of the event, and look forward to my next (and final!) job for 3D Printshow in Dubai a little later this month.

Textile Futures: article for SURFACE ZINE

Super happy to contribute a short piece about 3D printing for textile futures in last months inaugural issue of Surface Zine.

With a love of all things fluffy / shiny / colourful, the collective's aesthetic focuses on a post-internet yet critically tangible mixture of sculptural art and fashion - which perfectly suited my interest in the contemporary use of 3D printing for textile development.

Expo 15: Careers in the Arts


 I was delighted yesterday to make my way up to Leeds to contribute to Expo 15: A careers event organised by the University of Leeeds across a number of different subjects and University schools.

After having immensely enjoyed my time in the city within the School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies, I was more than happy to take a day off work to give a presentation about my story to a group of really enthusiastic (and really cool) freshers - all of whom were desperate to start gaining experience now to make them as employable as possible in the future.

I was asked to discuss my role at 3D Printshow in sync with my degree (History of Art) and the work experience / internships that I engaged with during my time as an undergraduate at the uni - and it was a brilliant experience. Working in the 3D printing industry has given me the opportunity to travel the world and work with an extremely varied collection of individuals, and it was only when I began explaining what I do and how I got to doing it that I realised how lucky I have been.

I then took part in a really interactive panel discussion about what it means to be employable - including questions from the audience about how to tweak your CV, how to get that first internship, and where to look for opportunities and funding. I was seriously impressed not only by the outgoing way in which this group of 18 year olds were engaging with what I was saying, but it was also great to see so many young people taking the initiative to really work out how they were going to realise their project ideas. I would never have even attended such an event as a fresher - so its clear that the culture is really changing in terms of young people knowing how hard it will be for them to find work after graduation.

I left feeling inspired, and happy to have encouraged some younger students to continue pursuing their goals - and it was great being back in Leeds.

I stopped by two of my favourite museums spaces on my way back to the station: The Henry Moore Institute and Leeds Art Gallery. Catching up on the city's incredible scene is always a pleasure - and I was delighted in particular by touring exhibition British Art Show 8, which was presenting some very strange and interesting work. The highlight for me was a 1 hour video by Rachel Maclean - I had never seen anything like it (also, kudos to Leeds Art Museum for some excellent curation and some daring wall-painting in the galleries themselves). What a great city!

A look into Biomimicry


My next piece for Disruptive Magazine is now live. I explored Biomimicry in the context of 3D printing - it was certainly one of the most enjoyable articles to research that I've been working on recently. Featured is Nervous System, Lee Cronin and Janine Benyus. Their work is all really different, but through reading the piece you'll see how beautifully their practice combines via Biomimicry as a process for 3D printing.

Liberator chic

Despite the number of years since the notorious 3D printed gun altered the reputation of additive manufacturing, its disruption resounds. Back in 2013, the project made headlines through the release of a 3D printed prototype ‘Liberator’ gun (and open source file) – and today, its influence continues to be translated across discipline and industry. ‘Liberator Rounds’ is a sculptural collection and presentation of the open source STL from Cody Wilson, and stands as a ceiling mounted chandelier of 3D printed guns by artist Addie Wagenknecht.


With a history of embracing the challenges that contemporary, open source culture offers, Wagenknect’s understanding of use and objecthood in ‘Liberator Rounds’ only develops this discourse further. The implications of an open-access technology (like additive manufacturing) already deliver endless industry benefits, but the potential for creative innovation and cultural expression are evident in Wagenknect’s art – almost as an extension of the internet’s power to do the same.
The series is about ubiquitous objects in our environment and a shift in contemporary context, the playful and subversive quality of surveillance and data culture in our everyday environments,” says Wagenknecht. “The work plays with the underlying notion of how culture is produced and distributed—how they have been affected by our disenchantment and simultaneous obsession [with] digital culture.” (via the Creators Project)
Although numerous downloads and 3D prints of The Liberator have been made across the world, ‘Liberator Rounds’ is one of the most interesting visual statements of that now pivotal moment in the public history of additive manufacturing. We look forward to seeing what comes next.

We've finally recieved and started distribution of Disruptive Magazine's first edition (of many) in print. It's been an exciting process to be a small part of, and I'm really pleased with how my article has been presented in the issue.

3D Printshow New York // Digital Fashion

Last week stood as the ninth 3D Printshow event that I've been heavily involved in producing. It was my second time working on the show in New York, and I have to admit that my love affair with the city has only deepened after another 8 days in Manhattan. We staged the four day show at Center 548 in Chelsea, right down the road from some of the most interesting gallery spaces - including Comme des Garçons and Gagosian Gallery. Needless to say it was fantastic to work in such a creative part of the city, as well as being so close to the water (West) and the High Line.

I curated and produced eight conference sessions over three days - but my absolute favourite (by a long way) was the Fashion session, which explored notions and practice within New York's computational fashion scene. It wasn't just the content of the afternoon (or that fact that most of the speakers are now quite good friends), but it was the relaxed yet high-level feel of the event. I was extremely proud of have put together such an amazing afternoon, and I couldn't have been happier to see it filled with such interesting people.

Layer by Layer: New Young Writers on Wool

Edited by Professor Catherine Harper at the University of Portsmouth, some of my written work has been published in Bloomsbury's Textile: the Journal of Cloth and Culture within a section called 'New Young Writers on Wool'.

In partnership with ModeConnect and The Woolmark Company, the work looks into the innovative ways that wool is being used in contemporary fashion design. I chose to alternatively deconstruct the production methodology differences between making a wool jumper and 3D printed a nylon element. I was inspired to explore this further after an interview with Massimo Nicosia, the Creative Director at Pringle of Scotland - who is integrating 3D printed parts into his traditional wool heritage brand.

It was a really fun project, and of course - it's always a delight to be published.




Disruptive Magazine: issue one

At 3D Printshow, we've recently launched the first issue of our new publication: Disruptive Magazine. I've been working on curating content for the event now for nearly two years, so was really excited to play a part in creating an editorial accompaniment to the show; I even came up with the name for the digital magazine during the concept development phase, which I was really proud of.

I've written a piece (pages 33 - 43) which explores why much of what's 3D printed in the fashion industry has been spurred on my the work of architects - and it was a lot of fun to write.

In the meantime, I'm putting together all of the conferences for this year's series of ten international events, whilst supporting onsite with arts management, curatorial and installation duties for our 3D printed fashion and arts galleries.

After having been complemented on my hand writing my whole life, I thought I'd put it to use this Christmas to produce some framed, mounted typography graphics, which are now available to purchase.

3DPS Paris 2014



I just got back from France where I curated the content for our Paris edition of 3D Printshow. Situated in the venue space within the Louvre, the collection of art and fashion pieces was very varied but looked really beautiful in the marble and stonework hall.

In all honesty, curating 3D printed work is incredibly difficult because there's not that much of it. Rather than picking work for the concepts or ideas they explore, we pick work based on it being of a high enough standard to exhibit. That being said, developing and creating the journey for our guests through the exhibition was particularly challenging for this event; the variation of production means was limited and the aesthetics of all of the involved pieces tended to clash.

Having said this, I was very pleased with the display and lighting choices that were eventually decided for the gallery. What made this exhibition especially hard was that I was very much sight-reading in that I was not given a confirmed floor space within the show before getting to the venue itself. Rather than curing the show in the lead up to the event, I had to work with what I had (including display furniture) onsite - and with this in mind, I'm really happy with what I created.

I also interviewed a lot of our creative contributors for the 3D Printshow youtube channel, and I'll post them in the coming weeks once they're edited up. Running interviews is mentally exhausting, but I found it a really rewarding way to spend time during the running of this event. These interviews, on top of managing both speaker rooms and all contributors throughout the show, proved to be pretty tiring, but everything went well.

I'm now curating a high-level medical summit that 3DPS are producing next month. Getting my head around the international biotech and medical scene is fascinating, and I'm currently putting together the timetable, agenda, and speaker list. Wish me luck!

3D printing at Topman Designs SS15

I know it feels like a while ago now, but it was London Collections: Men last week in London, and whilst I'm usually interested and involved with the shows themselves, this season was slightly different. Working together with My 3D Twin and Topman, the creative 3D printing agency I work with ran a brilliant project, in which models straight off the catwalk were 3D scanned and 3D printed.

After checking out the technology (more about this in a previous post), we were convinced the idea would run as a fantastic marketing campaign for Topman, whose SS15 Topman Design collection was in question. Not only has this initiative allowed for people who weren't present at the show to digitally interact with the collection, but it also illustrates a step in the right direction in terms of future uses of 3D technology for retail.

Leading British online retailer ASOS has this month announced a project using a similar technique. SIZE ASOS will run as a three day initiative, in which members of the public will be 3D scanned as a way of taking their exact bodily measurements, creating a database of true dimensions which will be used to improve the e-tailer's sizing structure. Whilst the technology is being used differently than how we implemented it for Topman Designs, its clear to see that people are recognising increasing value in the ability to bridge the gap between digital and IRL.

All that's left now is to wait until someone thinks of a seriously game-changing idea that will completely change how we look at the fashion industry on a digital platform. Exciting stuff, right?

3D print technology set to challenge the fashion industry

Fashion thrives on the constant threat of change. A seasonal trend storms its way into the heart of the industry to be forgotten a few months later – leaving behind a few stand-out pieces which will go on to define a moment in culture. These classic, timeless or iconic garments are loaded with importance; they might have been worn by a celebrity, or perhaps referenced a culturally significant issue. Fashion can be lusted after or cherished for many different reasons – yet rarely is it remembered for how it was made. The way in which garments are produced has not significantly changed for many years. From high street to haute couture, the techniques used are often traditional and their developments can be mapped out on a trajectory of textiles built from the same starting points.

In the last few years however, a particularly disruptive new process has made its way into fashion studios around the world. Computational design involving 3D print technology looks set to challenge the fashion industry through a series of contentious innovations. The question of how the industry will integrate this pioneering process remains critical.

3D printing allows for the manufacture of computationally designed objects. The object’s design information, an impossibly detailed, three dimensional CAD drawing, is sent to a machine, which translates the design into a printable file. This machine either uses a nib to print layer upon layer of molten plastic to create the object (like building with layers of Lego), or alternatively melts grains of plastic together with a laser to form the object (like building sandcastle). Although the processes sounds complicated, 3D printing is remarkably accessible to a broad range of industries. Its potential has increased recently, finding new creative as well as industrial applications and capturing the imaginations of progressive fashion designers around the world.

Although the pieces created range in a variety of textures and aesthetics, due to the fixed nature of printing materials, a lot of 3D printed fashion is stiff artefacts & accessories rather than flexible garments. This kind of design is often referred to as wearable art. Dorry Hsu’s collection Aesthetic of Fears (image 1) illustrates the amazing level of intricacy that can be printed, whilst Pia Hinze’s piece Neobaroque (image 2) shows how 3D printing can allow for the production of shapes which could not be made with any other method. Items like this aren’t readily wearable, as their impractical rigidity and eccentric style make for a very limited audience. This might explain why so far only the most outlandish celebrities have taken to wearing 3D printing pieces. We are still a long way off seeing this kind of fashion on the high street.

An increasing number of luxury fashion brands however, are taking on the wearability challenge of 3D print technology. Recently, Pringle of Scotland’s A/W 14 collection saw 3D printed elements and embellishments paired with their trademark knit.

The work of practicing textiles graduate Laura Martinez (image 3) also illustrates this approach. Collaborating with architect and material scientist Richard Beckett, Pringle of Scotland’s collection illustrates the multidisciplinary nature of 3D printing in fashion. Highlighting the increasingly apparent tensions between computational production and hand-crafted design, new skill sets are becoming necessary.
Traditional methods of production such as tailoring or embellishment onto fabric will always be used. They could be combined with contemporary, 3D printing techniques; however many people working within this new field insist that wearable technology can only progress through the continued development of 3D printed materials. Computational fashion runs the very serious risk of being led by engineers, scientists and architects rather than experienced fashion designers.


Regardless of the technical innovation, an awareness of the body is a vital in pushing the wearable limits of 3D print technology into the mainstream fashion industry. Studios such as Digits 2 Widgets spend time producing varieties of stunning and impressive 3D printed fabrics (image 4), which are useless if they cannot work with the human body.
3D scanning and printing might one day mean that we can all simply print our own clothes – this is absolutely the dream and could revolutionise the industry. The exclusive nature of tailored clothing and haute couture would be dismantled if body scan data is used as the template for garments printed by a machine. The 3D printed couture of Dutch designer Iris Van Herpen’s has already started shifts in this direction.


For now, however, fully 3D printed garments are not yet produced in one piece. Studios like XYZ Workshop have embarked upon printing pieces in parts which are then put together (image 5) with striking results.
Tech – of all kinds – seems to be this year most tenacious fashion trend. As more experimental processes and applications are developed, more outrageous pieces are presented on the fashion week runways. But 3D printing may have even more radical impacts, rather than simply altering the appearance of fashion, this technology may actually influence the structure of the industry as well. This is where things might get really exciting.

3D Printshow: New York // press

There's been plenty of interesting press from our 3D Printshow fashion event last week - I'm particularly amused by my interview feature on CNN Money's coverage of the show.



Whilst there is still plenty of hype surrounding 3D printing, people are still confused as to what it is and how it can relate to fashion. Admittedly, we're still along way off from realizing the dream of printing your own clothes in your own home. And additionally, we don't have much to offer yet in terms of 3D printed flexible materials. But last week we presented the start of what we believe is the next major turning point in the fashion industry - and it is exciting. We're currently at the point of producing piece-together outfits and 3d printed fashion accessories and artifacts, which are stunningly impressive at best, and aesthetically interesting at worst. Maybe next time, a presentation - rather than a runway show - will work better.

Either way, it was fascinating to witness the public's reaction to what I've been sourcing and working on for the last few months.

Another short 3D Printed Fashion essay



The following text was written for the Fashion House exhibition which I recently curated for 3D Printshow New York:

The rate at which 3D print technology continues to develop is evident across industries. Yet despite this awe-inspiring and wide-reaching progression, particular areas of exploration especially capture our imaginations. Fashion is one such area, and the collection featured at 3D Printshow New York serves to illustrate just what additive manufacture can do for wearable, technological design.
                The undeniable excitement that is apparent in all of the exhibited pieces demonstrates the potential that 3D printing can allow. Previously unexplored forms can be accessed by innovative techniques, encouraging a new school of designers who are working towards original and astounding fashion artefacts and garments. A fresh approach to fashion ensues: trends in computational design can be immediately accessed by anyone with a computer, allowing engineers, architects and professionals from a variety of fields to contribute to this ambitious sartorial discourse.
                Amidst the excitement, it’s certainly easy to get carried away by the new possibilities on offer. However, 3D printed fashion is by no means separate from the traditional and contemporary fashion design methods which are still popularly used throughout the industry. The tension between hand-crafted skill and machine-induced production is certainly evident within collections of additive manufactured wearables, and will doubtlessly remain an area of discussion and disagreement. This critical approach certainly lays the foundation for more fascinating research – both in terms of the materials being used, as well as the subject explored – and stands as a continuation of Fashion’s productive development.
                The pieces presented in this collection stand to question our own relationship with clothing and materials. Should 3D printed fashion be attempting to push creative limits, or should it be creating new ways to support one of the economy’s largest existing industries? And should the practical applications of 3D scanning and computational design overlook the stunning new forms that can be produced – however unwearable some of these pieces may be?
                Join us as we continue to explore and question the expanding field of computational design and 3D printed fashion.

Canal Mills: Conrtributions


The digital world is rarely represented anywhere but on our computer screens - yet the practice of artist Jen Hesse combines painterly technique with glitch visuals to create a series of stunning artworks.
Hesse’s large paintings reference online internet culture through the classical art medium of oil paint, which comes as a rather surprising collaboration. By fragmenting a narrative image through such datamoshing distortion, Hesse somehow manages to enhance – rather than destroy - the story and emotion in the picture. This leaves us with a beautiful interpretation of modern-day portraiture and still life, capturing both the physical and the virtual aspects of daily

 










This contemporary glitch aesthetic seems familiar to our hardware/software-reliant generation, giving a very fresh approach to a traditional method of art making. There’s certainly something fantastic about knowing that these images have been painted and thus physically exist, as opposed to being computer-generated files. Rather than floating around somewhere in cyberspace, these artworks are as real as the emotions that they illustrate in their subject and provoke in us.
